.The supposed Pakistani contact, Air Marshal Ali Mir, was killed in an airplanecrash on February 20, 2003, with his wife and fifteen senior officers.Zubaydah remains in American custody at an unknown site, his eventual fatealso unknown.Since American interrogators fooled him into talking, he hasrefused to provide further information about al-Qaeda or the September 11 plot.In September 2006 Zubaydah was transferred to the Guantánamo Bay DetentionCenter.Also in 2006, Ron Suskind produced the book One Percent Doctrine,which claimed Zubaydah was not nearly so important in al-Qaeda as had beenthought.Suskind claimed that Zubaydah was mentally ill and only a minor figurein al-Qaeda.Suskind s assertions have been countered by numerous others,including former al-Qaeda operatives.Regardless of the controversy, Zubaydahappeared before a Combatant Status Review Tribunal in Guantánamo on March 27,2007.There Zubaydah downplayed his role in al-Qaeda, but still claimed someauthority.Zubaydah has also become part of another controversy: whether or nothe was tortured by CIA operatives.Because the tapes of his interrogation havebeen destroyed, the nature of the torture is a matter of speculation.See Alsoal-Qaeda;
